Implementing a user-driven design process for safer online communication

Valimail develops security products to help organizations enforce DMARC for their emailing domains, monitor its senders, and build brand trust with branded emails after they’ve reached DMARC enforcement. DMARC enforcement works by publishing a list of trusted, allowed senders and blocking the rest. Valimail takes on the customer’s problem of figuring out and setting up every service sending for each domain (this is time consuming and technical with few succeeding on their own), but their vision for the future was to create an automated self-service application for customers to reach enforcement.

Before design system implementation

I was brought on to help scale their product suite by creating a design system to alleviate a runaway component library that was slowing down their development process. Later, I would steer their applications away from merely ‘showing data’ to ‘telling the user what to do’ to protect their teams' communication.

Raise the visual brand and achieve designer <> dev component parity
Refactoring 'Defend' so it reported relevant, granular sender data to IT users
